Length (km) Width (km) Slip (m) Moment Magnitude (Mw)
650 50 10 8.60
700 55 12 8.70
750 60 14 8.79
800 65 16 8.87
850 70 18 8.94

Calculated earthquake Moment Magnitudes (Mw)  for a number of different Juan de Fuca subduction zone scenarios are shown above.  The magnitudes range from 8.60 for the minimal rupture area and slip values, to nearly 9.0 for the maximum likely values.  Moment magnitude is normally used for expressing the size of large earthquakes.  The values are generally equivalent to Richter Magnitude values.
