The 1700 Juan de Fuca Earthquake - Steven Earle - Malaspina University-College
The following images and text are based on a lecture presented at Malaspina University College by the author on January 26, 2000 - the 300th anniversary of the last great Juan de Fuca (Cascadia) Earthquake. The earthquake affected coastal areas of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon and is recorded in oral histories of native peoples. The geology of earthquakes on the Juan de Fuca subduction zone is reviewed, along with the evidence that there was a major quake in 1700, that there have been others in previous centuries, and that there will be more in the future.
"In the days before the white man there was a great earthquake. It began about the middle of one night and continued about 20 hours, when it ceased."
