FRST 182 - GIS (Forestry
Applications)
This course
provides an introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) within the
context of natural resources. The
emphasis will be on spatial data issues, analytical operations and how to
utilize GIS to aid in better decision-making. In this course we will
utilize a two-pronged approach to attain the learning outcomes:
 |
labs will
be hands-on with the goals of gaining a basic skill set in
utilizing GIS software (ArcGIS) and applying an analytical approach
to solve problems
|
 |
lectures
will provide the fundamental geographic concepts upon which GIS is
based.

General Notices:

The 'conceptual portions' of the Virtual
Campus modules are worth reading as they do provide a strong link
between the material covered in lecture and the use of ArcGIS. The
material presented on these pages is also covered in the online exams for
each module (for those aiming at a 'blue ribbon').
|
 |
Not all of the hands-on exercises are
formally assigned. However, those who work through all the
material (concepts & exercises), do the exams and attain a blue ribbon
will receive a 1% bonus. Those of you who have, in the past, found themselves
'close to the next letter grade' will appreciate the value of this bonus.
