Exam Period Notes

• Here are some practice problems for the final exam, including solutions. Thanks to Dr. Peter Stone for preparing this handout.
• There will be a final exam problem session on Tue Dec 6 from 9:00 am to noon in Room 324 of Building  360 (the Math and Chem building). This is meant to be an informal session where you may ask questions, I can give you problems to try, we can go over the practice problems, etc. Attendance is optional.
• The final exam is on Thu Dec 8 at 1:00 pm in the GYM. The exam is comprehensive, covering all material since the first day of the course. The practice problems are a very good indicator of the type of questions to expect on the exam.

  The format of the exam is

  1. Question 1: 20 short answer problems worth 2% each. These are short problems requiring only one or two steps and should take no more than 5 minutes each.
  2. Questions 2-7: The remainder of the exam consists of 6 long answer questions each worth 10% and requiring approximately 10 minutes each.
  3. A formula sheet will be provided containing the quadratic formula and the factoring formulas on page 76 of your text (among others.) It does not contain the logarithm laws found on page 163 of your text, nor the exponent laws of page 11: these you should know. You are also expected to know certain elementary formulas (areas and perimeters of rectangles and circles are examples of these.) More exotic formulas (like the volume of a cylinder for example) would be supplied if needed.
  A few final notes: You must bring your student i.d. card to the exam. You may use a non-graphing, non-programmable scientific calculator for your work. You many NOT use your cell phone for a clock; all cell phones must be turned off and put away during the exam.
• I will be available in my office on Tue Dec 6 and Wed Dec 7 from 1:00-4:00 for help. It is unlikely that I will be available on Thu Dec 8 in the morning.
• Final grades are now posted. I will not discuss final exam grades by email or phone, however you may view your final exam if you wish. Please email me to arrange a time in this case.
