Linear Algebra  MATH 241

                        Instructor Dr. Lev V. Idels

Fall 2023

Linear Algebra is a wonderful and powerful tool and has applications in most areas of modern mathematics. Applications of Linear Algebra in Computer Science are: Graphics, Image processing, Cryptography, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Graph-Algorithms, Quantum Computation, Information Retrieval and Web Search.

Math 241 is a rigorous introduction to the LA, with an emphasis on proof writing and abstract reasoning. Topics include computing algorithms, matrix algebra, spaces and subspaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, best approximations, and elements of complex algebra. Applications to data science and machine learning.

Lecture Notes: Lecture notes will not, in general, be provided. It is up to the student to attend class. At times my lectures may deviate from the book, so I encourage you to attend lectures regularly.

Office hours/tutorials  are set on each Friday.  If you need to see me outside of the announced office hours, please set up an appointment with me, either by speaking to me before or after class, or by sending me an email message (include "MATH 241” in the subject line, please).

E-mail: lev.idels@viu.ca . Attend class if you choose to take this class, you’ll need to attend. A good portion of the material we cover will not be in your text. Don’t decide to take this class without committing yourself to attending each and every class. Office: Building 359 room 204.

Homework. Each Thursday HW assignment will be posted on D2L along with its Solution Keys on Sunday. HW will not be graded or marked. Many of the exam questions will resemble the assigned homework problems.

Grading and Tests. 4 midterms - 100%; that is,  each Test is up to max 25% .

A.  Exam dates are on Wednesdays: Sep 27, Oct 18, Nov 15 and Dec 6.

B.   For each midterm test a Practice Test will be posted on D2L with Solutions keys.

C.   After each Midterm Test its Solution Keys will be posted on D2L.

D.  All midterms are closed-book tests. Simple Sci calculators and a self-made formulae sheets( only formulae!) are allowed. The solution to a problem should be written bearing in mind that you are communicating to a reader (me, in this case). Thus, an answer should guide the reader toward the solution. The midterm tests are cumulative in nature.

E.   There will be no make-up tests; if you have a medical reason for missing a midterm, then you must provide me with a written request to be excused, and this must include a note from a physician. In most cases, your score on the comprehensive part of the final exam will be used in place of the missed work. If you have a question or concern about an assigned mark, please bring it to my attention within 3 calendar days of the date when the midterm is returned to the class. I will always answer your questions, but after 3 days I won’t change your mark.

F.    Last day of classes Dec 8’23.
