Course Structure & Content
An introduction to the application of
mathematics as a tool for studying complex systems in science and engineering.
Topics include model fitting, experimental modeling, modeling with difference , ordinary and partially differential equations.
The student will work through the assigned
online textbooks independently, complete bi-weekly assignments, and meet with
the instructor once a week for lecture/discussion. Course content will be
consistent with the standard classroom version of the course.
Syllabus’24
Block 1 |
Modeling of chemical, biological and physical
systems; Dynamical systems via difference equations |
Block 2 |
Modeling with systems of differential
equations |
Block 3 |
Modeling with partial differential
equations. |
Block 4 |
Fitting models to data graphically and
analytically. Experimental modeling. Cubic splines and interpolation. |
Assignments, Evaluation and Feedback
The student will be assigned weekly reading
from the assigned textbooks and will be required to submit proof based written
assignments. Graded assignments will be returned along with written comments.
Evaluation will consist of 4 Assignments worth 60% and a final project worth
40%.
