Lab 8 – Stream water samples from the Extension area |
The data from the March 21st field trip to Extension Creek are available below. They include an Excel file of the field information and analytical data, plus a couple of maps. For those of you who didn't see everything, we sampled the main stream at 50 and 25 m intervals (as shown on the map), and we sampled the tributary stream at 25 m intervals. The tributary stream flows out of the ground about 10 m above sample site 26. It looks like a spring, but I believe that the water is flowing out of a mine tunnel (adit).
Write up a brief description of what we did and how we did it. Based on your interpretation of the data, address the following points:
1) Compare the chemical features of the tributary stream versus the main stream. |
2) Does the tributary stream appear to have any affect on the chemistry of the main stream? |
3) Describe the trends in the turbidity data |
4) Describe the trends in the conductivity data. |
5) The map shows some uncertainty as to where the tributary stream enters the main stream. With reference to our sample locations, where do you think it enters? Is there any evidence to suggest that the tributary water enters in more than one place? |
6) Describe the trends in the pH data. |
7) Explain the effect (if any) that the coal waste pile appears to be having on the stream water. |
8) If these observations differ from what you expected to see, explain the differences. |
