  1. What is Carnegie's assessment of the nature of American society?
  2. What is the basis of Carnegie's opposition?  Is it sound?
  3. What are the arguments of Carnegie's critics?  On what basis are they opposed to Carnegie?
  4. What is the role of a) race and b) class in the imperialist/anti-imperialist controversy?
  5. What are the arguments which define the anti-imperialist position?  (in answering a question such as this you should not be discussing vague generalities, but should be able to discern quite clearly who said what)
  6. Why does The Independent think that imperialism is a "dead issue"?  What do you think of their argument?
