Discussion Questions

  1. What is the perception of the native tribes by both Jemison and by Megapolenis?  On what specifically is their evaluation based?  How do their perceptions compare to some of the earlier readings such as those by Thomas Morton or William Wood?  How would you account for any similarities and/or differences between the readings?
  2. What is the contribution of Thornton's article to our understanding of the period?
  3. In the introduction to the Thornton article, the question is posed of whether historians should refer to slave revolts as 'wars' instead of 'rebellions'?  What are the implications of the use of each term?
  4. Menard's article argues that an important difference exists between the pre-1660 and the post-1660 generations.  What specifically was that difference and what specifically accounts for it?
  5. What is the evidence on which Menard builds his argument?  Is it a sound base?
