Report - Your Choice

You decide on the topic.  Pick a specific topic relating to forest insect pest management.  Keep the topic narrow in scope.  It would be best if it were a topic that is not directly covered in lecture.  You have a fair degree of freedom - but if you are unsure just ask.  Example topics include:

bulletImpacts of the current mountain pine beetle outbreak (e.g. wildlife impacts, or socio-economic impacts, etc.)
bulletSignificant insect pests of Monterey Pine in New Zealand (obviously you can pick forest pests from other parts of the world, even Palm trees in the sub-tropics)
bulletPublic concern regarding Btk spraying fir Gypsy Moth in urban areas (i.e. Victoria/ Vancouver)
bulletBark beetle - root disease complexes
bulletPotential impacts of global warming on forest insect pest damage
bulletProfile a specific insecticide (or class of insecticides) - e.g. pyrethrins, carbaryl, insecticidal soap, DDT, etc.
bulletDetail the tree breeding efforts in regards to the spruce terminal weevil (obviously more detail than covered in class)
bulletOR, most likely of all, anything else that interests you (just clear the topic with me first)

It should be about ~1,500 words (~2,100 words if you work in pairs). It is expected that you have at least six sources of information, plus figures, diagrams, etc., as appropriate.  Be sure to properly cite all sources.  Helpful hints are provided for citing sources.

Your audience is a forester, so there is no need to explain the basics of forestry.  However, you should provide sufficient explanation of entomologic issues addressed (i.e. you are presenting to Jim so you would need to explain the 'bug stuff').

Also, be prepared to discuss any aspect of your report with me - i.e. if you include something in your report, be sure you understand it.
