Why We Created this WebQuest?

This WebQuest was created in order to engage grade five students in the learning of saving salmon.   Salmon are a major resource in Canada and it is important for students to not only realize the importance of saving these fish, but also it is imperative that children realize that by working together they can devise solutions for such a cause.

How Does This Connect with the Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs) ?

This WebQuest meets the following IRP Learning Outcomes for grade five students:

It is expected that students will be able to:

(Science IRP)

-devise a strategy for sustaining a living resource.

-describe the known and potential environmental impacts of using  BC's living resources.

(Personal Planning IRP)

-identify and apply steps in a decision-making process.

(Social Studies IRP)

-identify and clarify a problem, issue, or inquiry.

How Would I Use This WebQuest in my Classroom?

We have made this WebQuest to be fairly flexible to the technical level of your school.  For example, Step 2 in the Process section of this WebQuest not only provides a link to the Inspiration software; however, it also includes an Inspiration template for students to print out in case their school computer lab does not offer the Inspiration software.  You may choose to place more limits on the type of products your students produce; however, we decided to allow students to have a choice in ways to present their information in order to accommodate different learning styles.  This WebQuest was definitely intended to be used with teacher guidance and before students even begin this WebQuest, they should have some information on salmon, their lifecycle, their importance to Canadian fisheries (Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal), etc.

How Can I Create My Own Webquest?

After going through the initial experience of creating a  WebQuest, we were shocked at the simplicity of this process.  We used both Netscape Composer and Microsoft Frontpage to create our WebQuest and both of these programs were extremely user-friendly.   An extremely helpful website that includes information, examples, and even templates for creating your own WebQuest can be found at The WebQuest Page.

Remember, before beginning to create the actual WebQuest, make sure you have isolated a topic, a question, a process, and some sort of evaluation for the project.  The stronger your question, process, and evaluation, the more powerful your WebQuest will be.
