Marking Criteria

The criteria for this assignment is relatively straightforward for the first three questions.  These questions are self-explanatory, and the marks given should be an indication of how much information you should provide in your answers.  The last two questions are more complex, and will take longer to complete. A marking rubric is for all the answers, as well as an estimate of how long each should take, is provided.  Here is a breakdown of the marks for the worksheet.

1. For this question, we are looking for 5 reasons supporting the claim that Greek mythology was indeed important.  It is not necessary to write huge amounts here, but it is expected that 5 reasons briefly explained are included in the answer.
(15-20 min.)

    4-5 marks - answer indicates student has researched question thoroughly and has an understanding of the importance of        Greek mythology.
    3-4 - answer indicates some research, but is not as thorough as it should be.
    >3 - answer is lacking in terms of research and/or is too brief

2.a)  This question is marked out of 15. It is expected that students will list 3 different mythological figures with 5 points about each of them for a total of 15.

    b)  This answer should be 3-4 sentences in length and explain why you like the figure you've chosen.  It will be marked out of 10.
    8-10 marks - answer is suggested length, explains thoroughly choice of figure
    6-8  marks  - answer somewhat brief, explanation vague/lacking details
    >5   marks  - incomplete, answer is too brief, explanation unclear
(5-10 min.)

    3.a)  1 mark will be given for listing the two principal gods for a total of 2 marks.  The remaining 3 marks will be given for a   brief explanation of their roles in their respective mythologies.  These will be broken down as follows:
(10-15 min)
    3 marks - answer includes specific descriptions of both gods, indicating understanding of similarities/differences
    2 marks - answer is unclear as to roles of both gods, but some research is evident
    >2 marks - answer may be confusing gods with one another, roles mixed up/incorrect, little research

b) There are several differences between the two creation myths outlined in web sites provided.  Answer should indicate ability to locate and summarize this information
(15-20 min.).
    4-5 marks - answer indicates key similarities/differences between two creation myths, research clearly evident
    3-4 marks - some similarities/differences highlighted, research evident, lacking some key material
    >3 marks - key points missing, answer not indicative of ample research

c)   There are key differences between the Greek and Norse underworlds.  Answer should indicate ability to locate and summarize this information.
(10-15 min.)
    4-5 marks - answer indicates key similarities/differences between two creation myths, research clearly evident
    3-4 marks - some similarities/differences highlighted, research evident, lacking some key material
    >3 marks - key points missing, answer not indicative of ample research.

4)  Finishing the myths will be marked out of 10.  The marks will be broken down into creativity and content.

    Content - 5 marks
    4-5 marks - few errors in terms of punctuation, spelling, grammar
                     - definite ending to the myth, goo d flow to the writing
    3-4 marks - some errors present
                     - ending not clearly established, writing somewhat choppy
    >3 marks  - major errors, poor editing
                    - ending unclear, writing choppy, no logical flow
    Creativity - 5 marks
    4-5 marks - creative use of language and overall style
                     - ending ties in with mythological concepts
    3 marks    - creativity in writing
                    - ending lacking in mythological concepts
    > 3 marks - little creativity expressed in writing
                    - writing does not tie in with mythology

5)  This is the final task, and will be marked out of 20.  The myth should be a minimum of two word processed pages in length, and handed in with the rest of the activities.  This activity ties in with all of the prior activities and is a chance for students to showcase what they have learned thus far.  The created myth will be word processed and marked for grammar, punctuation, etc.., so proper editing is crucial at this stage.  The marks will be distributed according to the following criteria:
(1-2 hrs.)
18-20 marks - few errors, editing evident
                     - understanding of mythology strongly demonstrated, mythological figures used/created
                     - myth flows from beginning - middle - end
15-17 marks - some errors in the writing
                    - some understanding of mythology, limited use of mythological figures
                    - beginning - middle - end evident
11-14 marks - several errors, poor editing
                     - understanding of mythology not demonstrated, mythological figures lacking/not present
                     - myth does not flow, beginning - middle - end unclear
>10 marks     - writing incomplete
                     - major errors in writing, little, if any editing
                     - writing does not tie in with mythology
                     - poor flow from beginning - middle - end
