Alexander Mackenzie

Alexander Mackenzie was the first explorer to figure out the route across the Rockies to the Pacific ocean.

He worked for the North West Company in Montreal.  They operated many trading posts right across North America.

Alexander had heard about a great river that flowed to the Pacific.  If he could find that route, then his company could ship furs cheaper from the Pacific than carrying them across the whole country back to Montreal, then England.

Alexander set off in 1789 for the great river he had heard about.  He travelled with four voyaguers and several Chipewyan guides.

Mackenzie and his men travelled the great river by canoe.

On his first journey he travelled north and finally ended up at the Arctic Ocean.  He had to return to Fort Chipewyan before winter set in.

On his second journey in 1792 he travelled west for many months.  He and his men carried their heavy packs up the mountains, and over high cliffs.  They paddled the river until they finally reached the Pacific.
