This WebQuest was created by Lisa Cartwright for EDTE 611.

I created this WebQuest with the grade four curriculum in mind.

In order for students to successfully complete this WebQuest, they will require background information concerning endangered animals. Students will need to know what the terms endangered, extirpated, threatened, and habitat means. I have included definitions for these terms from the Environment Canada: Canadian Wildlife Service website. Students will need to have some experience with researching and locating pertinent information on a page. Finally, students should know how to use a Venn diagram as well as how to compare information in order to draw conclusions.

While I have only included IRP outcomes for the grade 4 level, it could quite easily be adapted to any grade level with teacher ingenuity. Here is a short list of possible outcomes that could be used for this WebQuest.

Grade 4

Science
Life Science (Adaptations of Organisms)
· discuss how changes in an organism's habitat can affect the survival of individual organisms and entire species

Language Arts
Comprehend and Respond (Strategies and Skills)
· read, listen, and view for specific purposes

Comprehend and Respond (Comprehension)
· organize information or ideas they have read, heard, or viewed in the form of simple charts, webs, or illustrations
· locate specific details in stories, poems, mass media, and audio-visual media

Communicate Ideas and Information (Improving Communications)
· monitor and correct their own spelling by using manual and electronic spell checkers, dictionaries, and thesauri

Due to the nature of some of the animals, little information was available online.
In addition, as good teachers, we realize that it is important for students to use other resources
than the internet to gather information from.

Here is list of the outside resources that I consulted.
They are available at the Malaspina University-College Library:

[Science & Technology lecture series, spring 1999] [video recording] / [sponsored by the Mid-Island
Science, Technology and Innovation Council (MISTIC) and the Malaspina Faculty of Science &
    Technology]. Bryant, Andrew.
