Extensions:

This lesson can be extended through having the students integrate story telling.  Students can do the optional step nine and write a story, about their adventures in King Arthur's court, and bring it to publication.  Students can share their stories with friends and make illustrations to go with the story.  Students can also learn more about King Arthur's court and the reasons behind the shields and coat of arms.  Students can also research their own family and see if they have a coat of arms.  Finally students can, with the help of the teacher, e-mail the holders of the web sites used for the assignment.  Students can learn more about the author's page.  Students can also get e-mail pals from Scotland.

Adaptations:

Teachers can give out the outlines for the coats, or the students can work in groups of two.  Students can use software such as Kidpix to create a coat on the computer.  For the brainstorming aspect teachers can use Inspiration software or have students use Inspiration so they can see their ideas in concrete form.
