| Step One
|
You will, individually, think about qualities in yourself that you value and like; things like sports you play, activities you are good at, and things you like about yourself. You need to keep these qualities in mind during the following steps. |
| Step Two | You need to go to the resource page and look at pre made coats of arms and shields. You are doing this to learn about different types and styles of coats, also to see a variety of coats available. You will also learn about why individuals and families have coats. It is your job to print off the worksheet and then go to the resource page and choose the step two option. You will look at family and individual coats and follow the steps on the worksheet and then hand in the worksheet. *** You need to scroll down the web pages to find surnames. *** To learn how you will be marked on the worksheet click here. This step of the process should take you between 10-20 minutes. |
| Step Three
|
You will click to resources and search three sites: one for shapes, one for colours, and one for symbols or animals to put on your coats. You need to pick colours, shapes, and characteristics (animals or creatures) that you like and that represent you. This step should take you between 15-20 minutes. |
| Step Four
|
You will use an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper to create your coat of arms. You need to make your coat large enough to take up 3/4 of the piece of paper; your coat must be this size so we can all see it during your presentation. You will also need to have at least one colour, two animals, and a shape to your coat. The shape must be either created by you or one from the Internet. This step will take 1-2 hours and will take us at least two days. This step will be completed without the computer. Your coat of arms will be evaluated on the criteria listed here. |
| Step Five | Check point. You need to show your coat of arms to your teacher once you have decided on all aspects of it. You can approach the teacher with the ideas, before starting, or you can approach the teacher with the work in progress. Remember, you do need to see the teacher before you finish your coat. This will take less than 5 minutes. |
| Step Six
|
You need to finish your coat and then write a paragraph, on a separate piece of paper, about your coat. It is your job to answer these questions for your paragraph: What characteristics do you like about yourself? Why did you choose the colours? Why did you choose the animals? And why did you choose the shape? You will also write down one thing you learned working on this assignment. This step will take approximately 30 minutes. |
| Step Seven | You will present the coat and information to your fellow classmates. You will use the questions you answered in your paragraph to describe why you chose to do what you did. Please click here to see how you will be evaluated on the presentation. The entire process of class presentations will take about 45 minutes. |
| Step Eight
|
After the presentations you will click to resources and see what the Canadian coat of arms looks like. You will also look at the web pages you viewed for the worksheet. You will complete this step to learn more about the components of the coats, because of your new knowledge of the subject. You will also display you own coats around the room so you can see each others work. The conclusion to the WebQuest will take about 30 minutes. |
| Step Nine | Optional : You, to extend the lesson and to tie it to the King Arthur's theme, will write a story about your first day after joining the court. You will start the story with the coat of arms and why you needed to create it; for example "I am a wanderer who has joined...". If you do not want to write a story, you can create a poster, song, poem, or video about the same theme. |
