This WebQuest was created by Dawn Whitfield as part of a EDTE 611 class assignment.  The class was given through the Education program at Malaspina University College, during the Fall 2000 program session.

The purpose of this Quest is for students to create individual coats of arms to be placed on their shields in King Arthur's court.  Students will need to present the coat to the class at the end of the assignment.

The students will need to either, individually, or before the WebQuest as part of the class, learn about what they value in themselves.  Teachers can brainstorm ideas and personality traits with the students before hand using Inspiration software for story webbing.  This component of the lesson is not included in the WebQuest, but teachers may adapt the lesson as they see fit.  For the purpose of this WebQuest, students will learn about the origins of coats of arms, different types or styles, create their own, and present them.

This WebQuest is for a group of learners no younger than grade four, due to the reading and work involved.  Students will need to have knowledge of computers, in that they will need to find information on the Internet.  Students will also need to be given background information about the assignment.  They will need to know about King Arthur's court and a basic knowledge about coats of arms and shields.  The Quest can be adapted for older grades; please go to Teacher's Corner for the teachers process page, adaptations and extensions.

The WebQuest fulfills outcomes from the British Columbia IRP, in many subject areas, for grade four some examples are:

Grade four LA (communicating information and ideas): use grammatically correct language when writing and speaking, including consistent verb tenses and correct pronoun references (for the paragraph and the speech).   Grade four Art (creating/communicating): students will make a 2-D image to illustrate and decorate (for the artwork on the coat of arms).  Grade four Social Studies : students will identify a problem, issue, or inquiry (for the coat of arms).   Grade four Personal Planning: students will demonstrate responsibility for their choices (displayed through the students paragraphs about their choices of colours, creatures and shapes of coats).

Please look around and enjoy the WebQuest!
