Introduction

Students will have the opportunity to explore Québec's unique culture online.  Once they have 'visited' Québec, they will decide on specific aspects to be included in a PowerPoint scrapbook. This WebQuest has been designed around B.C.'s Grade 7 French, Technology and Language Arts Learning Outcomes.

This WebQuest was planned to be used with the Visages 2: Le T-Shirt Unit.  However, it can also be a 'stand-alone' tool for exploring Québec's culture.

Process

This WebQuest could probably be completed within six or seven one-hour computer blocks. This assumes one computer per student and that students have the requisite knowledge identified below. This time frame does not include presentation time.

It should take approximately two or three sessions for the students to research Québecand find facts/pictures specific to their family role.

The next computer session should be devoted to organizing the accumulated information onto an Inspiration concept map.

The students should be able to complete their PowerPoint scrapbook in three sessions.

Finally, students will have the opportunity to present their masterpieces.   Consider presenting these scrapbooks to other classrooms in your school.

Requisite Skills and Knowledge

  • students need to know the expectations for working in groups and, if necessary, sharing computers between several students

  • students need basic internet search skills

  • students need to know how to use computer functions such as cut, paste and save

  • to complete the task using PowerPoint, students should have experience and training with this program

  • students must be able to use organizational charts and may need experience or training with the Inspiration program, if available (free trial inspiration download)

  • students need basic French vocabulary and grammar that meets widely held expectations for Grade

  • students should have an understanding of the concept of culture

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes have been taken from B.C.'s Ministry of Education IRP's

Language and Visual Arts:

  • locate and interpret details in print or non-print media to gather information and build understanding (Grade 7 LA - Comprehension)

  • use strategies for generating and shaping ideas (Grade 7 LA - Composing and Creating)

  • share responsibility for the effective functioning of groups (Grade 7 LA - Self and Society)

  • use pre-established criteria to evaluate group processes and their own contributions to the group (Grade 7 LA - Self and Society: Working Together)

  • demonstrate respect for diverse cultures of a wider community (Grade 7 LA - Self and Society: Building Community)

  • demonstrate the ability to collaborate to develop group displays for particular audiences (Grade 7 Visual Arts - Context)

Technology:

  • students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity

  • students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources

  • develop a plan and clearly communicate ideas to develop a product (Grade 7 Technology - Self and Society)

French:

  • identify elements of Francophone cultures present in Canada

  • form brief messages using writing as a tool for language development and to share information

Extensions/Adaptations

Extensions

  • students could be asked to provide a descriptive paragraph in French for each cultural aspect they have identified

  • students could explore Québec's history within Canada using internet resources

  • students could study Québec's culture and compare it with that of English Canada

  • students can 'travel' as individuals, looking into all identified aspects of Québecculture on their own

Adaptations

  • students can print pictures and collect images from library and school resources to create a "hard copy" scrapbook

  • teacher can limit or select aspects of Québecculture which are more easily researched (e.g. museums, food)

  • organizing information in "hard copy" format rather than using an Inspiration concept map or chart

  • captions for pictures can be in English or partial French

  • introduce students to an online translator, such as Babel Fish on the Alta Vista site

  • groups can be organized by the teacher so that weaker students (in any area) are supported within the group by students with stronger skills

Evaluation

The teacher will evaluate each group on their final PowerPoint scrapbook (see printable evaluation rubric).  Each student will also be required to evaluate their participation within the group (see printable self-evaluation rubric). It is up to the individual teacher to determine how much weight will be allotted to each area of evaluation.

Conclusion

By the completion of this WebQuest, your students should be familiar with many aspects of the Québec culture.  If they have used Inspiration and PowerPoint programs, they will be proud of their technological accomplishments!

Au revoir!!
