TEACHER'S PAGE
| RATIONALE: | It is relatively easy to obtain information from the
internet. The greater challenge lies in extracting relevant
information, and translating this information into knowledge and
personal meaning.
This webquest attempts to provide scaffolding that engages students in tasks that require them to synthesize and analyze the information they collect. The webquest is divided into two tasks. Because global warming is a vast topic, task #1 is designed so that students can focus their research on a narrow aspect of the issue. Students collaborate to prepare PowerPoint presentations in order to disseminate information and their interpretations of that information. Assessment and evaluation have been designed to focus students' efforts on the process of working collaboratively, and researching and interpreting information. The PowerPoint presentation is therefore somewhat de-emphasized. Students are directed to detailed rubrics to clarify where their efforts should be concentrated. |

| BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
|
This is a relatively challenging webquest. Students are required to obtain, synthesize and analyze information related to a complex issue. Students accustomed to the principles of critical thinking will be best equipped to meet this challenge. Prior knowledge related to climate change is not necessary, but would be helpful. Students should be accustomed to working collaboratively. Prior to beginning the webquest, it might be helpful to review how to be an effective group participant. Discussing the assessment and evaluation with students will help direct their efforts. |
