Teacher's Page

Rationale:

The purpose of this webquest is to:

1.       Teach students about some of the important historical time periods of Ancient China using a technological medium.

2.     To have students investigate at least one aspect of ancient or Modern Chinese Culture.

3.     To allow students an opportunity to practice doing research on the Internet.

Level:

I have designed this webquest to go with a Social Studies unit in my Grade 7 class. However, this webquest is not exclusive to Grade 7, it just happens to fit the Grade 7 curriculum best.

Time Frame:

(Based on a 1 hour block scheme)

·        Start up time (group formation and research choices)

·        Research project 1 (Era's/Dynasties)

·        Group Jigsaw

2 Blocks

·        Specialty Area Research

·        Article Writing

3-4 Blocks

·        Project work (putting all articles together into newspaper format)

1-2 Blocks

Note:

·        There is a lot of information in the sites being offered in the webquest. Please be flexible! If students are on task and engaged in their research or struggling with the technology, extend the time frame to ensure maximum learning.

Learning Outcomes (B.C. Ministry IRP documents: Grade 7):

Social Studies:

·        Demonstrate understanding of events as part of a chronological sequence.

·        Describe daily life, work, and family structures in selected ancient cultures.

·        Analyze effects and consequences of contact and conflict between ancient cultures.

·        Identify connections between ancient cultures and current cultures.

·        Look at some ways in which ancient governments acquired and used power and authority.

Language Arts:

·        Demonstrate a willingness to interact with others in a variety of activities involving communication.

·        Use electronic media features to locate specific information or materials.

·        Use information they have read, heard, or viewed in a variety of written or graphic forms, including written notes and charts.

·        Locate, gather, and select information for specific purposes from a variety of electronic sources.

·        Revise and edit to improve basic content, organization, and effect to best suit their audience.

·        Apply formal rules and conventions of English language to presentations, including news reporting.

Adaptations:

·        For a lower level student the research aspect of this project may be difficult due to the fairly dense amount of reading involved. To ensure success for this student, pair him/her up with another student in the group and allow them to research together. By doing this you still allow the lower level student to have some experience with Internet researching and the content information about Ancient China, but keep the student from feeling excluded and behind.

·        You could also reduce the amount of a research a student must do by just having them research a single topic and not an Era. Giving this student extra time allows them to be a part of the final project by submitting an article they could truly be proud of, as they were given enough time and support to complete the project.

Extensions

·        Have the student who completes early create an editorial page for the newspaper, with an overview and introduction to this month's issue.

·        Have the student who completes early create some images for newspaper to add some more variety to their group's Gazette issue.

Materials

·        1 computer/student

·        quiet areas where groups can meet for their jigsaws

·        printers and paper

·        poster board for newspaper book

·        glue and scissors
