Phase 1: Gathering information

In pairs, you will all be assigned to different provinces of Canada.  Pack your travel journals and read the directions below.  Then depart British Columbia for a new province!

  1. You have been paired with another student from the class.

  2. Each pair has been assigned to one province or territory of Canada to become an expert on.

  3. You will become an expert of the province or territory that you have been assigned to by virtually travelling there.

  4. When you arrive there you will find information on this province or territory's climate, geography and population of people.

  5.  You will record this information into a travel journal.

Phase 2: Create a Map of the Province that you visited

With your partner you will represent the information you gathered in your travel journal on the province you visited.

  1. You will recieve a blank map of your province.

  2. You will represent climate, geography, the capital, population and specific landforms or major water bodies found in your province or territory on your map.

Geography - copy the physiographic region colouring that you did in your journals.

Population - for every 10,000 people draw one stick person on your map.

Climate - create a chart for your findings for precipitation and temperature range.

Capital - draw a dot where the capital is and name it.

* Draw one or more landforms for the province you studied (major river, mountain, etc.)

Phase 3: Presentation/ Taking notes of other presentations

After discovering features of one province of Canada you will present it to the other travellers of your class.  Everyone will then fill in the rest of their journals, completing a journal of every province and territory in Canada!

  1. When presenting your map of a Canadian province or territory you will tell the class about the climate, geography, population, the capital, and any landforms or major water bodies that are found in your province or territory.

  2. Be sure to check the evaluation page that will show you how to present.

  3. After you have finished your presentation hand your map into your teacher and sit down and open your journal to a new page so that your's ready to take notes on presentations.

Taking Notes on other presentations:

  1. Have a blank page open ready for each presentation.

  2. Fill in the name of the province or territory being presented.

  3. Fill in as much of the page with the information presenters are telling you.  Put your hand up to ask the presenters to repeat or clarify information if you can't take good notes.

  4. If you like, you can ask questions after the presenters are finished.

  5. After all pages of your journal are filled in you will be able to move on to the final phase.

Phase 4: Answer the question "Which province of Canada is most like British Columbia?"

Now you have been exposed to all of Canada.  Are you "all Canadian" now?   If you are then you should be able to compare other provinces and territories with British Columbia!

  1. Compare climate, geography, population, major landforms or water bodies of each province or territory with British Columbia's.  Use your completed travel journal to do this.

  2. Hand in your completed journal to your teacher.

There is no right answer!!
