There are special codes that can be used to construct boolean search strings using item-level information. These are based on policy numbers for each value. We simply call them "caret codes" because they begin with the "Caret" (^) symbol. These will vary based on what values are in any given Sirsi database, but follow the same pattern for the prefix part, i.e.: ^F.. is Format; ^T.. is Item Type; ^H... is Home location; ^L.. is Library; ^1... is Item Category1; and ^2... is Item Category2. These are the only ones identified so far; it is uncertain whether codes for the Current location exist.
These codes are useful for very complex searches and comparisons. In a typical SIRSI search, one can only search on one option in each category; one can not exclude nor search for more than one specific value in a category. With the use of these caret codes, full boolean searches can be constructed with operators 'not' and 'or'. This allows us, for example, to find items owned by a number of libraries but not by another; items unique to one library; items falling into one of several categories, etc. It is acknowledged that since we are using Item Category 1 & 2 (Form General/Form Specific) many searches can be constructed more easily and quickly using those options rather than these codes. Consequently, these codes may be of limited use to us. They are documented here for reference purposes ...... just in case!
Examples:
(^L2 or ^L3) not ^L1 -- finds items that are in Cow or Pow but are not in Nan.
(^L2 and ^L3) not ^L1 -- finds items that are in Cow and Pow but are not in Nan
^L2 not (^L1 or ^L3 or ^L4 or ^L5) -- finds items unique to the Cow collection
^T3 and ((^L2 or ^L3) not ^L1) -- finds books which accompany videos in Cow and Pow only
^F26 not ^H18 -- finds all maps that are in other than Atlas Stand locations
(^H1 or ^H6) and (electronic resource) {ti} -- finds all items in Stacks or Reference that have a CD-ROM included
