To diffuse innovation and build capacity in sustainable tourism practices within rural regions of BC by showcasing innovators, sharing their practices, and providing tools to build the competitiveness of the province.

BC Regional Innovation Chair in Tourism and Sustainable Rural Development 

BC is committed to making its tourism industry sustainable and has the potential to position itself as Canada’s industry leader. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to learn from those already leading the way and then build on their successes. Sustainability is especially important to those in rural BC since tourism products often rely on sensitive natural and cultural resources. By identifying and showcasing these rural innovators, the industry will be in a stronger position to provide visitors with sustainable tourism experiences throughout the province.

 

This initiative includes:

Identifying and Showcasing Innovators
A user friendly manual of sustainable tourism practices was developed and made available to showcase innovators in BC.

Sharing Tools to Build Competitiveness
Using the newly created “Green your Business: Toolkit for Tourism Operators” workshops were held in:

The team developed a self assessment tool to assist operators to "audit" their sustainability practices and identify ways to move forward. To download this self assessment tool, click here.

Identifying Gaps Within the BC Tourism Industry
Research was conducted to identify knowledge gaps and barriers to adoption of sustainable tourism practices.
