COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to the history of Canada. The course is strongly recommended for students who intend to take other courses in Canadian history, and is a prerequisite for some upper-level Canadian history courses. The course is also for students who may take no other History course, but want a general introduction to Canadian history.  While the main focus of the course is the political, social, economic and structural development of Canada other themes will appear in lectures and readings. These are mainly First Nation history and interaction with European newcomers, women’s contribution to Canada’s history, and working-class history.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

All assignments are compulsory. Assignments for this section of History 131 include participating in six discussion groups, writing two essays, a midterm exam and one final exam. In order to pass the course you must attend at least three discussion meetings over the semester, complete all written assignments, and write the examinations.

PLAGIARISM

Failure to acknowledge the use of words or ideas from other authors constitutes plagiarism. If you use the words of another writer, you must use quotation marks to indicate that you have borrowed the words, and you must cite your source in a footnote or endnote. Ideas, statistics, or interpretations that are borrowed from another writer must also be acknowledged through a footnote or endnote. Plagiarism, whatever its extent, is cheating and will result in a mark of zero for the assignment.
