About the Lab

The Wireless Lab was created in 2003 as an applied research lab in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Surrey, BC, Canada. Its purpose has been to investigate emerging technologies in the following areas:

  • Wireless communications
  • Embedded systems
  • Ubiquitous computing: Context-aware design issues in handheld devices

While at Simon Fraser University, we had been grateful to receive contributions from the following:

  • University Relations programme of NOKIA which has generously contributed mobile phones, training and development tools to our Lab.
  • OPNET Technologies, Inc. which has contributed licenses of its OPNET Modeller for our network research.

With the move to the Vancouver Island University, the emphasis is placed on the embedded systems - ubiquitous computing areas. The current projects revolve around the creation of highly usable cellular phone applications using technologies such as GPS receivers and vibration sensors (accelorometers) as well as taking advantage of the phones' connectivity to access information from the Internet such as weather and bus schedules.
