INGENTA SERVICES TO FACULTY AND STUDENTSIngenta Table of Contents and Ingenta Search Alerts are two services available to Malaspina faculty (and now students, too) as part of our site license with Ingenta. Ingenta will provide to you, via any email address you choose, with the Tables of Contents for up to 50 journals, as long at the journals are indexed in the Ingenta database (well over 28,000 are). These Tables of Contents will often arrive before the journal issue in question has even been published (click here to see a sample TOC). Search Alerts, on the other hand, will provide you with the citations for up to 25 subject/keyword or name searches. These searches will be performed once a week, and the results will be sent to your email address (click here to see a sample Search Alert). GETTING TO INGENTA TO SIGN UP To confirm your affiliation with Malaspina, you must initially sign-up to use Ingenta from a campus network computer when creating your profile. Once your account has been established, you will be able to connect to Ingenta from anywhere and update your profile using the ID and password you specified when you set up your account. From the Library’s Homepage (http://www.mala.ca/library.asp), click on Search for Resources. A little menu will display; click on Full Service MARLIN (login). Complete the login by using your employee or student library card number and PIN, and click on the Login to MARLIN button. The computer will then display the MARLIN search command screen. From the left frame, click on Journal Articles, All Subjects, and finally Ingenta. SETTING UP YOUR INGENTA PROFILE Click on the Register button, and complete the Personal Registration sign-up form. You get to choose your own user name and password. You may choose any email address you wish to receive the Ingenta services. You might want to keep the default “I would like full-text access to my institution’s/company’s subscriptions.” Click on the Continue button to reach the second screen. You should now be ready to set up the Tables of Contents and Alerts services. TABLES OF CONTENTS Click on Manage My Ingenta, and then click on the My Table of Contents button from the left frame. Make sure that the Add tab is active. You may search for new journal titles to add to your profile in two ways: alphabetically and by searching by keyword in the title. Either way, you will be presented with a list of relevant journals. You may select any title by clicking on the little box to the right of the desired title. Then click on the gold Add to Alert button at the top or bottom of the screen. You may order up to 50 journal titles for Tables of Contents delivery to your email address. To delete a title, make sure that you have selected the Manage My Ingenta command, and that the Current TOC Alerts tab is active. It will display your currently selected titles by clicking on My Table of Contents. Click on the little box to the right of the title(s) you wish to delete, and then click on the Remove button at the top or bottom of the screen. OBTAINING JOURNAL ARTICLES Do not order documents from Ingenta - As new issues are published for the journals on your list, the Tables of Contents will arrive at your email account. Ingenta makes it easy for you to order the documents electronically straight from the Table of Contents messages – for a fee. Do not order the photocopies of articles directly through Ingenta unless you are prepared to pay the expense yourself. Instead, for journals we own at Malaspina, stop by the Library and pick up the photocopy yourself. (If you are a Malaspina employee, you may wish to use your department’s photocopy card available from the Loan Desk). For other titles not held at Malaspina, fill out an online interlibrary loan request. When you sign on to MARLIN with your library card and PIN numbers, you will see an Interlibrary Loan lozenge on the left frame that will provide you with in-depth information on making electronic ILL requests. Please feel free to contact your librarian liaison or Linda Leger for additional information on using the electronic ILL request forms. First- and second-year students are permitted 20 free interlibrary loans per year; third- and fourth-year students are permitted 40 ILLs. Faculty, staff members, and graduate students are permitted 50 ILLs per academic year, which begins July 1. SEARCH ALERTS This service will perform requested keyword and author searches of the Ingenta database on a weekly basis and send the resulting citations (which were downloaded to Ingenta during the previous week) to your email address. You may request up to 25 such searches on your Ingenta account. Click on Manage My Ingenta from the left frame, then click on My Search Alerts. Make sure that the Current Searches tab is active. You will be able to see your current search alerts in the main frame, if you have any. To add others, click on the Search Ingenta button from the left frame. Perform the search you desire; for example: library and (instruction or reference). You may use Boolean operators when searching Ingenta. Select the years you want covered in your search using the pull down date menus. If this, indeed, looks like a useful search to you, click on the Saved Searches button in the left frame. Tick the little box to the left of the search(es) you want to add to your Search Alerts. Then click on the Go button for an individual item in the Save Selected Items command line at the top of the screen. Alternatively, Ingenta allows you to set up folders for these searches, if you desire. Lastly, switch on your alerts by clicking the ON radio button by each alert. Searches for names may be entered in any way, but Fred Smith or Smith, Fred will result in Fred Smith, Fred L. Smith, Fred Kenneth Smith, etc. For common names, expect some false drops in the search results. To delete a search alert request, make sure the Saved Searches and Alerts tab in the main frame is active. Click on the square box by the search to be deleted, and then click on the delete button at the top or bottom of the screen. Tip: It is a good idea to perform the various searches in which you are interested on the entire Ingenta database - back to 1988 if desired. Then set up the Search Alert service to keep you updated in your area of interest on a weekly basis from then on. Do make use of the Help available from any Ingenta screen. The Help provided is thorough and clear. Once you have set up an account, you can access it from any computer either through the library's catalogue as described above, or by pointing your browser to URL http://www.ingenta.com. INGENTA AS A JOURNAL INDEX Remember that you can also use this database as a scholarly journal index. It indexes well over 28,600 scholarly journals from 1988 to the present date. You do not need to sign onto your Ingenta account when you want to use the journal index function. Click on Search Ingenta from the Ingenta home page, http://www.ingenta.com, and begin your search. SIGN OUT PLEASE Remember to Sign Out when you are finished using Ingenta to free up a port for immediate use by another. CAN’T GET INTO YOUR INGENTA ACCOUNT? Should your account be blocked, please advise Linda Leger, who will help get your account up and running: legerl@mala.bc.ca; (250) 753-3245 ext. 2347.
