The following is a brief summary of what we'll be doing and when.

Leave Nanaimo on the 6:30 AM ferry.  1st stop: Hope Slide to look at the rocks involved in the slide and to talk about why and how it happened.  2nd stop: look at Eocene fossils in the Princeton area and talk about the climate and environmental conditions that they indicate.  Overnight at a motel in Hedley.

1st stop: Hedley to look at the sedimentary and intrusive rocks (sills) responsible for the formation of important gold deposits such as the Nickel Plate Mine.  2nd stop: the Monashee Gneiss north of Osoyoos.  Various stops between Osoyoos and Cranbrook. Overnight at the dorms at College of the Rockies in Cranbrook.

1st stop: examine the Proterozoic Purcell Fm. in the Cranbrook/Kimberly area and talk about rifting of North America. 2nd stop: the Frank slide to look at the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian limestones that failed, and to discuss the failure mechanism.  3rd stop windmills in the Pincher Creek area.  Overnight at Steve’s sister’s place in Lethbridge.

Dinosaur Pk. to look at the stratigraphy of the Cretaceous sediments and to look for dinosaur bones.  Overnight at a motel in Bassano  Alberta.

Tues.

Visit the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller and spend more time looking at the Cretaceous rocks. Overnight at the dorms at the University of Calgary.

Wed.

Various stops to look at Rocky Mountain sedimentology and structure between Calgary and Field.  Overnight at Ramparts Creek Hostel in Banff National Park.

Thurs.

1st stop the Columbia Icefields on the Banff-Jasper Highway.  2nd stop hike to Wilcox pass to look at Cambrian and Ordovician rocks.  Overnight at Whiskey Jack Hostel.

Walcott Quarry hike, examination of Cambrian limestone and shale and discussion of the evolutionary significance of the Burgess Shale fossils.   Overnight at Whiskey Jack Hostel.

Mt. Stephen hike.  Overnight at Whiskey Jack Hostel.

Various stops to look at rocks and tectonics of the Kootenay and Qesnellia Terranes.  Visit to the Revelstoke dam area and to the potential rock failure at Checkerboard Creek. Overnight at the hostel in Squilax on Shuswap Lake.

Mon

1st stop: Afton Mine to look at the mine and talk about porphyry copper deposits in B.C., their host rocks and their genesis.  2nd stop: the MacAbee fossil site near to Cache Creek – more Eocene depositional environments.  3rd stop Cache Ck. Terrane rocks at Cache Ck., then head for the 9 PM ferry.
