VIU students began writing the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition in 2006 The Putnam, as it is generally known, consists of 12 questions each worth 10 marks each.

• The exam is always written on the first Saturday in December.
• The exam is written in two sittings: three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon.
• It is written simultaneously across Canada and The United States.
• The Putnam exam is a notorious challenge and often the median score is zero (i.e. half the participants score zero). A number of people who have won the Putnam contest have gone on to earn Nobel prizes and Fields medals.
• The highest score achieved by a VIU student is 20, attained by two students in 2010.

The VIU Putnam Wall of Fame lists all VIU students who have earned at least 10 marks on the Putnam exam.
