1.  a poet; a poetess: This is the oldest Latin name for a poet. It fell into disuse (“poëta” was used instead) until it was restored to honour by Vergil.

 

2.  An oracle, i.e. a teacher, master, authority in any art or profession; a foreteller, seer, soothsayer~
